Arrivederci...2012...

Do you watch David Letterman? I don't watch it regularly, but I have watched it enough to know that the Top 10 List is the reason to watch every night. In Letterman style I am going to close out 2012 with....

The Top Ten Reasons to Read the Enabler and Her Codependents in 2013

10. You never know when an innocent post about a drive home will turn into a blog about porn.

9. The Enabler is not afraid to look for needles in haystacks. Or payphones.

8. The Enabler loves to break grammar rules and then gripe about other people breaking rules too. Klass act.

7. When you least expect it, the Enabler will do a give away. Or threaten to put unsuspecting individuals' pictures on the InterWebs.

6. The Codependents are hilarious and adorable. The Enabler is not biased in any way.

5. The Enabler lies in Top Ten lists; she is biased. BUT. Who else will lie to you like that?

4. The Enabler will admit to having chicken in her hair. And catastrophic deodorant failure.

3. The Enabler may or may not be running an experiment entitled The Sexperiment. You'll have to read in 2013 to see what a bizarre-o idea it was. And why it took 11 weeks.

2. Because 2013 will be even more humiliating for the Enabler than 2012. The boundaries continue to fade away.

And the Number 1 Reason to read The Enabler and Her Codependents in 2013....

1. The Enabler stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night and will save the states from the Fiscal Cliff. Ok, that one is a lie. The Enabler figured out how to get Gilligan off the island. That was a lie too. The Enabler will have exclusive reports on Kim Kardashian's baby. Also a lie. Just keep reading in 2013...

Happy New Year!!!

The End of a Year...

This is the last day of 2012. I took a few moments to think over the last 364 days. It was a good year. I don't normally make resolutions for the new year; it just isn't my style. BUT. If I were to make a resolution, it would be to make 2013 even better than 2012.

-Love on my babies even more.

-Love on J even more.

-Make more friends.

-Become closer to existing friends.

-Don't worry about dust bunnies.

-Get a haircut more often.

-Do a better job of time management.

-Just live it big. Every day.

Anticipation...

Good day! Hope you are all doing well. I am doing my very best job at pretending that January isn't a few days away. I am in complete tax season denial mode. It's not on the verge of happening. No way. 60 hour work weeks are just not around the corner.

Ok, you caught me. I am fibbing. Tax season is upon me. I can sort of already tell. I will pull it together. I will comb my hair. I will wear nice pants that do not have holes in them. I can do this.

This little face will cheer me on.....

So, before I get super busy and forget to blog, is there anything I can blog about to please the masses 8 people who read this every day? I'm taking requests. :)

Grass...

For some reason, I snapped a picture of some grass. It was still rather green a few weeks back. We've had a mild Fall and Winter thus far. The kids even wore shorts one weekend in December.

Thus far.

Not quite this week.

It has been cooooollllldddd. I wonder if this grass is still green. How cold does it have to get to make the grass shrivel up? This is something I know nothing about. Maybe I'll google it later....green grass...

Speaking of green....

You can all be green with envy now....because I went to see Les Miserables with Shannon and her son, Blake. Oh my word. It was so good. Like, wow, this is as good as the book, good. Like, wow, this is better than the play, good. Has anyone else seen it and felt that way?

Run to Me...

Layton loves to run to me. Do your kids do that? He'll get on one side of the yard and tell me to stand on the other side. He'll run as fast as he can and crash into me for a big hug and kiss.

I'm sort of at a loss for words this week. The Christmas season used to be my favorite time of year, but now it's just utterly depressing and annoying. It will take me a few weeks to get over the Christmas induced psychosis.

Things That Make Me Go, "Ahhhhh"...

This cozy, little man makes me go, "Ahhhh." He's good for hugs and kisses.

More Than Two Decades...

There are some things that I cannot even imagine not having. I'm sentimental like that. I have a large "memory box" that has all kinds of treasures trash inside. There is an envelope with J's name on it that contains a Mello Yello wrapper. Seriously. I pulled it off a 20 ounce Mello Yello that he was drinking in Trigonometry. In high school. Seriously, people, I'm a freak. There are other odds and ends too. Newspaper clippings. Notes. Programs from plays. Pictures. Whole nine yards of memorabilia.

Certain items of my apparel are also "memory box" material.

My most treasured pair of shoes....

These are Red Wing, steel toe work boots. I've have them for two decades. They are dirty and scuffed and have traces of concrete on the laces and in the creases. I still wear them from time to time. The last time I wore them I had J drive past a few of the Habitat for Humanity homes that I helped build. I told the codependents that I helped build those houses in these very boots.
I doubt that I will ever throw these shoes away or donate them to charity. When these boots become too ragged to wear, I will add them to the box. The things I have done while wearing these boots are a huge part of who I am...just like the Mello Yello wrapper from Trigonometry.

History...Visited...

When I was a child, I learned about the Ku Klux Klan from history books and older generations. I knew that it started in Pulaski, TN, but I had never thought much about the specific location. Until...

I met a woman who told me about a building her family owns. It is the building where the KKK actually originated. She told me there is a plaque on the front, but that they elected to turn it backwards. There is a second plaque that designates the building a historical location in Tennessee. I admit that I was fascinated that the building is still there. I guess I had just always assumed that the klan was organized in some dark basement, or that the building had been torn down. So, in classic A-Ro fashion, I asked J to take a little family field trip to Pulaski one weekend. I have always believed that travel (even if it's just 45 minutes to Pulaski) is one of the best ways to educate myself and my children. Ella is studying Alabama history this year, and the KKK is an unfortunate but necessary part of any Alabama history class. This field trip was not an adventure to encourage hate; please know that. This outing was meant to encourage tolerance and love for others.

The building was sort of as I expected it to be. Rather small. Mason work. An ordinary building with an extraordinary past.

The plaque to the left of the door is the one that mentions the KKK and is turned backwards. The owner told me that every now and then a group of tourists will ask to see it, so she will grab a wrench and turn it around.

I can understand why some people would be offended that the building is on the National Register of Historical Places given the hate and murderous ideas born inside, but I view it as a teaching landmark. Even in unassuming places, atrocious ideas can begin to grow. I want my children to learn from the mistakes of the past and not be easily engaged in group thinking.

Right here. This is where it started.

The Ku Klux Klan is still around, but its numbers have been declining. Its story has not ended. The lessons to be learned from its history and origins are not declining, and the story will never end.

Party with Santa...

Goodness knows I love a good party. The company I work for has an annual Christmas party. The best part about it is that all our children are invited to attend. Why? There is a special guest every year who brings presents for the children.

SANTA!!!!!!!!!!!!! (in my best Will Ferrell voice)

Hadley wasn't too sure about the whole Santa thing. She told me she was NOT going to sit on his lap when he gave her a gift. She got an itunes gift card which was exactly what she wanted. She also got to give me a sideways smile when I begged for a picture.

Little Cherub Boy received a Captain America Lego set...also what he wanted.

Ella got a Lego Friends set. It was one of the top items on her list.

Between us - the parents buy the gifts and our wonderful marketing gal, Kate, puts them in a bag for Santa to pass out. As far as the littles are concerned, Santa knows everything on their lists and brings a little taste of Christmas morning to the party.

A good time was had by all.

Are they cute, or what?

An Unfortunate Normal...

Today, I googled "preventing massacres in schools." Today, I googled "Kevlar."

Are these normal things to be googling?

Normally, I do not blog about tragic events. Normally, I keep things light and fluffy here. This is my happy spot on the Internet, and so I try to keep it that way. That is my normal. Happy. Mindless. Fluff. Not today. Today, I am going to step outside my comfort zone, and I am going to tell you what I think and what I feel.

I recognize and understand that my children face an unfortunate normal. My children and yours no longer have the happy, mindless, fluffy normalcy that you and I had growing up. Their world is a scary one. I can remember being in school and being terrified that someone might try to sell a bag of weed to me. What I wouldn't give for weed to be the biggest problem that all of our children face each day.

I recognize and understand that my children and yours have to practice lock down drills at schools. I remember being in school and sitting in the hallway with a mathematics book covering my head while laughing during a tornado drill. What I wouldn't give for drills to be fun and unnecessary.

I recognize and understand that my children and yours have to hear about children dying at school. Do you remember when it was legal to have a gun on school property? Here in the South, it wasn't (and still isn't even though it's now illegal) unusual for a teenage boy to have a hunting rifle in his truck. What I wouldn't give for those rifles to stay in the trucks and never cross the plane of the door.

I recognize and understand that my children and yours have to face a new normal, but I Do Not Accept that there is nothing that can be done to change the new normal.

I think there is more that can be done to protect our children. I think that all doors should be locked. I think that the doors to schools should be "buzz in" type doors. I think that armed law enforcement resource officers should be in as many schools as possible. Yes, I understand that if someone really, really wants to get into a school, he/she will find a way to blow the door open, BUT we don't have to leave the door open inviting the ill inside. A lot of the front doors are unlocked all day every day here. I can walk inside my two youngest children's school at any time. No cameras. No locks. Walk right in.

I think there should be an alert system to notify parents of events on or near school property. If universities can text the entire student body with updates, I think that local school systems could do the same. Let the parents know what happened and what to do. Where to go. Who to see. How to help. The information should flow from school officials to the parents without media interference.

I think there is more that can be done to protect the mentally ill from harming themselves and others. Parents and family members of individuals suffering from a mental illness do not have adequate avenues of support and treatment. Deinstitutionalization continues to be preferred, and let's be real for a moment - a 72 hour hold is not near enough time to address the gravity of mental illness. These individuals need serious time, medication, and therapy to conquer their demons...and the people who love mentally ill individuals should be able to force the time, medication, and therapy without lengthy court proceedings. Yes, it almost always has to be forced. The sick often do not realize they are in need of help, and sometimes they flat out do not want help. I know from personal experience that it is painful to dial 911 to save the life of someone you love. It is even more painful to hear your loved one spewing hate at you for making the decision to call for help. There should be better options. Involuntary commitment should be an easier process.

I know that many will immediately point to gun control, and I understand the logic. I also understand that heroin and meth are illegal, but I can still buy both if I choose. Banning weapons cannot be the only answer. In fact, I don't think it's the answer at all. The problem isn't with the laws; the problem is with the individuals who choose to break the laws.

I think the media needs to stop sensationalizing stories like Newtown. Report the story. End the story. The constant coverage, the theme songs created for the story, the graphics plastered on the screen, teasing viewers with words like "as new details emerge"...It has to stop. I will remember Adam Lanza's name and picture probably for the rest of my life. Will I remember him for something wonderful like curing cancer or saving a million babies? No, I will remember him because for the last several days, his picture and story has been on every major TV station, Internet site, twitter, facebook, etc. He is infamous. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Adam Lanza's name is not the one that should be easy to recall. The names of the twenty children and six adults should be the ones to recall.

I am willing to lobby or write or beg to change my children's normal. I am going to lobby and write and beg. Will you join me? We have the ability to make changes to our laws and environment that can provide our children and our neighbors with more safety. We have the ability to change the future. Let's do it. Starting now. Home...

I love going home at the end of the day. I love walking through the door and knowing that I can plop down on the sofa and relax for a minute. I cook supper. I play with the codependents. I love those first few hours home every day.

Posted by Picasa

I look at old, rundown homes like this one and think how sad it is that things get this way. I'm sure that whoever lived here many moons ago enjoyed the same period of "the day is over" relief that I have every day.

I am very glad that I get to relax for a bit every single day.

Laughing Girl...

No, I don't know what was so funny.

She laughed and laughed.

I never did figure out why.

I just let her laugh.

Radio Popped It...

While cruising around town in the Volv-Ro, I normally have some type of music playing. The codependents like the hot station. You know, the one that plays the top 40 hits. During the last few months, I have realized that allowing WZYP and KISS FM to play in my car is not a wise parenting move; however, it has already been established that I am not the most responsible parent on the block. In fact I am a most pitiful excuse for a parent. I try very hard, but this whole nurturing thing just doesn't come naturally to me.

Side Bar: Hadley had to write about her role model for school. She told me she didn't have one. I implied that I could be her role model. She promptly told me that I am not role model material. Yep, my own child realizes that at any moment DHR is going to come in and scoop all the codependents up for a more suitable and responsible home.

So the radio plays. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the songs until I notice one of my offspring rocking out to a particular song. In the last year the following conversations/events have been precipitated by a radio song...

-Payphone - Thank you, Maroon 5. We went on a whole payphone expedition in an effort to find one because my children didn't know what a payphone happened to be. This one is kind of my own fault though. I didn't have to take the payphone hunt all over North Alabama. I could have given this one up or shown them a picture on the Internet. Instead, I launched an all out fatwa to find a working payphone.

-Too many boys. - Taylor Swift. Sweetheart, let's talk. Ella tried to convince me that Ellie Goulding was the artist behind one of your songs because she didn't want to admit you had been dumped. Again. Her reasoning? She is convinced that every song you sing is about a different boy that broke up with you. To quote Ella, "Too many boyfriends." That's right. My nine year old thinks you're a floozy based entirely off the number of songs you have played on the radio.

-Menage a trois - Thank you, Katy Perry. There was a most uncomfortable moment in our local Burger King when Layton began singing about last Friday night. In my usual state of dishevelment, I hadn't even noticed that three-ways were mentioned in your hit song. Thank you so very much for that Kodak moment at the BK.

-What's sex? - Did you know there is a song called Birthday Sex? Well, there is, and I kind of fell apart when Ella asked, "What's birthday sex?" Layton followed it up with, "You know, it's sex on your birthday." The obvious next question was, "What's sex?" Meanwhile, Hadley is sitting shot gun laughing out loud while squealing, "I haven't told them a thing." Don't forget, she was corrupted by middle school. Thank you, radio stations of the world. My children were further corrupted by an innocent drive home. I successfully avoided that question with the littles. Distract and Redirect. Works every time.

-Let' get the hell out of here. - Thank you again, Katy Perry. Ella may or may not have yelled, "Let's get the hell out of here" after hearing Waking up in Vegas. I ran like hell because I was afraid someone in an authoritative position might over hear my child's somewhat colorful quote. We had a talk about how little girls shouldn't talk that way, but that Mommy can blog that way. Ha!

-You're not sexy. - Thank you, LMFAO. Your songs are delightful. They are less delightful when a seven year old boy starts to dance in the grocery store while singing I'm Sexy and I Know It. Need I
say more?

-Jack Daniels v. Scope - Thank you, Ke$ha. My little cherub of a son just loves to tell people that he brushes his teeth with Jack Daniels.

You would think that at some point I would pull it together and turn off the radio.
